Ahaskaraa

Every part of a Bharatanatyam costume

Five stitched pieces make a complete set. Knowing each one makes dressing quick on performance day.

1. The blouse

The fitted top, usually with a gold zari border that matches the rest of the set.

2. The pleated fan

The signature element — it opens at the front between the legs when the dancer sits in araimandi.

3. The pallu

Worn diagonally across the chest and pinned securely at the shoulder.

4 & 5. Hip cloth + pyjama

The hip cloth wraps the waist; the matching pyjama is worn underneath. Together they complete the set.

Always do a trial fitting

Snug, but loose enough for a deep araimandi. Rented costumes can be adjusted or swapped if you book early.
