Wear them only for the performance, hang them to air afterwards rather than folding while warm, and never machine wash — silk and zari need professional dry cleaning only. Why silk needs special care
Classical dance costumes use silk and zari (real or imitation gold thread). Both are beautiful and both are delicate — a little care keeps them looking new.
Before the performance
- Apply make-up, deodorant and perfume before dressing, and let them dry fully.
- Wear a thin cotton inner layer where it won’t show, to absorb sweat.
- Keep the costume away from open flames (lamps, diyas) during festivals.
After the performance
- Air it, don’t pack it. Hang the costume to breathe before storing.
- Don’t fold it while it’s warm or damp.
- For storage, wrap in a cotton cloth — never plastic, which traps moisture.
Cleaning
Silk and zari are dry clean only. Never machine or hand wash at home. If you’ve rented, simply return the costume and let us handle cleaning.
